Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop

At street temple fairs, Mazu pilgrimages, and all religious occasions, you can hear the sound of gongs and drums. Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop in Xianxi Township, Changhua County, has preserved the traditional craft of handmade drum making, now passed down to the third-generation owner, Huang Cheng-feng. With the advancement of technology, many traditional crafts are gradually being replaced by machines, leading to a decline in the number of 'master craftsmen' we often speak of. In the early days, before machines existed, craftsmen honed the value of their handmade skills through repeated learning and exploration, using the warmth of their hands to create each product. This long-established drum factory still retains the most traditional craftsmanship, requiring many intricate steps from sun-drying cowhide, soaking, shaving, shaping, and so on. It is an indispensable part of traditional craft.
