Lugang Creek

The Lugang Creek drainage is located south of Lugang's urban area. During the Qing Dynasty, merchant ships could sail into it, serving as an important transportation waterway for early trade with China. It also bordered the old street district and was a hub for goods exchange at that time. This contributed to Lugang's reputation as one of Taiwan's most prosperous cities, captured in the saying 'First Tainan, Second Lugang, Third Monga,' and bears witness to the bustling scene of a thousand sails entering the harbor back then. However, as time passed, the existing Lugang Creek drainage lost its original function and has become a drainage ditch collecting rainwater and domestic wastewater from the urban area today. Through the 'Lugang Creek Revitalization Project,' the county government aims to connect the old street and historic town areas, integrate with local residents' lives, and increase recreational spaces for both locals and visitors. The project seeks to restore its former glory as the 'Mother River,' revive its cultural landscape, and bring back the splendor of the old Lugang Creek. The Lugang Creek waterfront corridor spans approximately 1.5 kilometers, featuring diverse spaces along its banks such as plazas, green belts, waterfront walkways, and a water stage. The water stage and Wind Sail Plaza provide venues for arts and cultural performances. At either end of the river section, the Kaiyuan Plaza and Wind Sail Plaza showcase two public art installations, 'Fulu Beast' and 'Deer on a Boat,' respectively. Currently, Kaiyuan Plaza also hosts water dance shows every evening from 6 PM to 9 PM. The transformation of Lugang Creek offers a recreational and cultural space for tourists and local residents alike, enhancing the surrounding environment.
