Hung Yi Museum

Master Hung Yi graduated from the art design department of Mingdao High School in 1988 and began working in installation art in 1990. In 2000, he was selected to reside at Taichung's Stock 20, the most important contemporary art hub in central Taiwan at the time. He is now an internationally renowned artist, celebrated both domestically and abroad. His works are incredibly vibrant, often featuring animal motifs, which spark imagination and evoke a sense of artistic wonder! The museum showcases some of his early works from high school, alongside pieces that have returned with him from international exhibitions in cities like New York and Washington, including numerous two-dimensional and three-dimensional sculptures. Embracing the philosophy that "localization is globalization," Hung Yi believes that different places cultivate different kinds of flowers. When contemplating Taiwan's local style, he symbolizes the essence of daily life and folk culture, then layers soft, vibrant, and substantial cultural imprints onto sturdy internal steel structures. These symbols, such as floral patterns, blessings, paper-cutting, and blue-and-white porcelain, are flexibly reinterpreted by him, breaking free from their traditional fixed and singular meanings. This approach creates greater imagination and inclusivity, allowing them to merge and connect with new visuals and possibilities, all while showcasing his unique personal style. Hung Yi also conceptualizes the "museum" as a symbolic artwork itself, employing postmodern ideas to integrate diverse architecture, materials, and elements. Within this expansive space of over a thousand pings (approximately 3,300 square meters), old and new intermingle, and functions transform, deconstructing the traditional "white cube" notion of a museum and infusing it with more local colors and emotions.
