Born in Lukang, a town renowned for producing master sculptors, Huang Ma-ching apprenticed with wood sculptor Mr. Wang Jin-yi at the age of 14, laying the foundation for his traditional wood carving skills. Lukang's wood carving techniques primarily originated from the Quanzhou school on the mainland, known for its delicate style, and its depictions of flowers, birds, insects, fish, and historical figures are remarkably lifelike. Huang Ma-ching's wood carving creations further focus on concerns for Taiwan's natural ecological environment, such as wetlands, Kinmen's horseshoe crabs, and the black-faced spoonbills at the Qigu estuary. He imbues each piece of wood with emotion, and through each stroke of his chisel, he awakens the public to the message that 'human selfish actions have already destroyed the habitats of coexisting species.' To ensure these beautiful forms endure, he diligently carves their images, thereby seeking out the cherished memories of this land.
