Lai He Memorial Hall

The development of Taiwanese literature was suppressed for a long time. After the Nativist Literature Debate in the 1970s and political/cultural localization in the 1980s, the wave of the Taiwanese literary movement gradually broke through the authoritarian grip of the KMT (Party-State). In 1994, to commemorate Lai He's centennial birth anniversary, the private sector initiated the establishment of the Lai He Cultural and Educational Foundation. Lai He's descendants jointly donated to establish it. Author Chung Chao-cheng, scholar Lin Ruey-ming, and academician Li Chen-yuan recommended candidates for the board of directors, gathering people from various fields: the academic community (Lin Ruey-ming, Chen Wan-yi, Lu Hsing-chang, Hu Wan-chuan), the literary and art community (Chung Chao-cheng, Lin Heng-tai, Lee Nan-heng, Sung Tse-lai), the medical community (Li Chen-yuan, Chiang Tzu-te, Cheng Chiung-ming, Chen Yung-hsing), the political and business communities (Liu Feng-sung, Yao Chia-wen, Chen Wei-ming, Shih Ping-huang), and family representatives (Chou Kuang-hsiung and Lai Yueh-yan). Lai He's eldest grandson, Lai Yueh-yan, served as the first chairman. In 1995, Lai He's eldest son, Lai Sang, and eldest grandson, Lai Yueh-yan, planned the construction of Heyuan Building at the former site of Lai He's clinic, establishing the Lai He Memorial Hall. The museum houses a complete collection of Lai He's relics, books, calligraphy and paintings, manuscripts, and related documents. It also continuously collects and exhibits manuscripts and artifacts of writers from the Changhua area, aiming to reconstruct the traditions and spirit of Changhua's cultural figures during the Japanese colonial period.
