Puyan Shunze Temple

During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, people surnamed Chen from Quanzhou, Fujian, migrated to Taiwan and settled in what is now Puyan Village. They respectfully invited the sacred spirit of Emperor Xuanwu for worship, leading to the establishment of Puyan Shunze Temple. Later, some of their descendants moved to Xihu, where they invited the “Second Emperor” to establish Xuantian Temple; others moved to Xiushui, inviting the “Third Emperor” to establish Sansheng Temple. These three 'brother temples' have held gatherings where members of their respective management committees came together, discussing their shared history and heritage, truly enjoying each other's company! Puyan Shunze Temple is renowned for its miraculous powers, with many legends circulating locally. It was ravaged by fire and rebuilt in the 37th year of the Republic (1948). In the 87th year of the Republic (1998), it was demolished and rebuilt again, standing as it is today. Its design is quite distinctive: to enter the temple, one must ascend two curved stone staircases, which encircle a curved stone-carved dragon wall. The dragons carved on the wall are lifelike and majestic, and the interior of the temple is lavishly adorned with exquisite wood carvings, making it quite magnificent. One of the most unique features of Puyan Shunze Temple is its extremely rare clay statue of Emperor Xuanwu. When Puyan Shunze Temple was severely damaged by fire in the 37th year of the Republic (1948) and the temple was reduced to ashes, a statue of Emperor Xuanwu was sculpted from clay during its reconstruction. It now boasts a history of over fifty years and remains remarkably well-preserved, truly deserving to be designated a national treasure-level historical artifact.
