Zhongyi Temple

The Zhongyi Temple in Beitou, Lukang, originally branched off its incense from Quanzhou, Mainland China. Its veneration began in 1790 AD (the 55th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign). Initially, it operated under a 'Lu Zhu' (incense master) system, with deities worshipped in rotation at private homes. A dedicated temple was later built in 1823 AD (the 3rd year of Emperor Daoguang's reign). The temple's exterior is grand and magnificent. Its side walls are adorned with marble carvings featuring poems by prominent calligraphers, painters, and literary figures from the Lukang area. Inside, it boasts exquisitely crafted wooden altars and a plaque inscribed with "義勇精忠" (righteous and courageous, loyal and devoted). The temple's overall design is quite opulent, utilizing many vibrant colors in its decorations.
