Shi Zhen-yang was born in Lukang in 1946. His father, Shi Kun-yu (1919-), was a master carpenter specializing in traditional architecture, with ancestral roots in Quanzhou, Fujian. Shi Zhen-yang's introduction to wood carving came from his father. In his childhood, he often accompanied his father to various temple construction sites, gradually developing an interest in wood carving through this exposure. Around the age of 18 (1963), he fully dedicated himself to woodworking. Initially, some projects were still contracted by his father, with Shi Kun-yu often handling the design and Shi Zhen-yang responsible for the actual craftsmanship. He continued in this capacity until he was 34 years old (1979), when he began to independently contract all projects.
