Although old-style mountain cannons were no match for surging enemy forces, Baguashan, formerly known as Dingjunshan, had a brick fortress built on it when Changhua City was completed in the 20th year of Jiaqing (1815). Named Dingjunshan Fortress, it contained four artillery batteries and one tower. In the 1st year of Tongzhi (1862), Dai Chaochun and the Bagua Society launched a rebellion. Baguashan was occupied a few days later, and the Dingjunshan Fortress batteries were taken control of and used to bombard Changhua City. Changhua City was subsequently captured two days later.
