1895 Taiwan Defense and Peace Memorial Park

The 1895 Taiwan Defense and Peace Memorial Park commemorates the resistance forces who fought against the Japanese during the Qing Dynasty's Guangxu era. Inside, there is a sacrificial hall for the public to pay respects to the martyrs. On either side, there is an ancient cannon, a pavilion, and a flower trellis. The ancient cannons were cast in 1884 (the 10th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty). They served as tools for the resistance forces to fight against the enemy during Governor Liu Ming-chuan's tenure and the Japanese invasion. They were originally placed in front of the Baguashan Pavilion (now the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall). In 1972, they were moved in front of the Baguashan Garden Restaurant, and then relocated to their current site in 1983. The 1895 Taiwan Defense and Peace Memorial Park was originally named 'Baguashan Anti-Japanese Martyrs Memorial Park'. After being re-planned and renovated, it was officially renamed '1895 Taiwan Defense and Peace Memorial Park' in February 2008. The renovated park is fresh and beautiful, featuring modern-styled ramps and spacious wooden platforms. From here, one can overlook the Dadu River banks and imagine the heroic spirit and dauntless resolve of the volunteers during the anti-Japanese war. Today, the scent of gunpowder is gone, replaced by lush greenery, birds chirping, and insects singing, making it an excellent place for many locals to relax and exercise.
