During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese built many shrines in Taiwan. Shrines were places where Japanese people worshipped deities. Shrines were further categorized into official shrines and local shrines. The Yuanlin Shrine was built in Showa 6 (1931). It was originally an ungraded shrine, and in Showa 17 (1942), it was promoted to a township shrine, becoming one of the shrines in Yuanlin County during the Japanese colonial period.
