The Wenkai Academy Martial Temple, Wenchang Shrine, and Wenkai Academy are three adjacent buildings that stand in a row. In the 4th year of Emperor Daoguang's reign (1824) during the Qing Dynasty, Deng Chuan'an, the Lukang Naval Defense Commissioner, proposed building the academy. Merchants and gentry from the eight Quanzhou and Xiamen guilds responded by donating funds. The construction of the academy was completed by the 7th year of Daoguang's reign (1827). It was named 'Wenkai Academy' in memory of Shen Guangwen, a Confucian scholar of the late Ming Dynasty, whose courtesy name was 'Wenkai'.
