Huai Zhong Shrine

Mainly dedicated to: The Eighteen Righteous Individuals. History: Huai Zhong Shrine is a county-designated historic site, established during the Yongzheng Emperor's reign (Qing Dynasty). Its origin dates back to the spring of the tenth year of the Yongzheng Emperor's reign (1732), when Pingpu aboriginal people from Dajia Xidu, led by Lin Wu, gathered forces to resist the Qing government and besieged the county seat. General Lü Ruilin of Taiwan led troops to suppress the uprising. At that time, Zhang Hongzhang, the Tongzhi (Assistant Prefect) of Tamsui, was patrolling villages with local militias and was mistakenly attacked with spears and arrows, possibly by indigenous people. The villages near A-shu were then largely cultivated by Cantonese immigrants. Upon learning that their superior was under attack, they rallied the villagers to drive back the Pingpu communities. Zhang Hongzhang was thus able to escape, and the uprising was eventually quelled after four months.
