Lao Chong Gui Trail

The Lao Chong Gui Trail is located in Beipu Village, Sanwan Township. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers long with gentle slopes and is mostly shaded by trees, making it a cool and comfortable path. The Taiwanese pronunciation of "銃" (chòng) is the same as "槍" (qiāng), referring to an old weapon similar to a gun. The name "Lao Chong Gui" (Old Gun Cabinet) suggests that this place was once an arsenal or ammunition depot for firearms, a strategic military location used by Han settlers to arm themselves and defend their homes during the early development of the mountainous terrain. The route of the Lao Chong Gui Trail largely follows a mountain ridge and later served as a transportation route for local agricultural products. However, with the gradual completion of modern highways, this ancient trail lost its function and fell into disuse and obscurity. It was later renovated and reconstructed using natural ecological engineering methods, maintaining its original dirt path. Along the trail, visitors are accompanied by camphor trees, acacia trees, and bamboo groves. During the Tung Blossom season, petals flutter romantically, making it a scenic and beautiful natural trail.
