Rail bikes revitalize the Old Mountain Line railway, allowing visitors to experience the cultural beauty of Sanyi mountain town. The Old Mountain Line, completed in 1908, is hailed as the "epitome of modern railway engineering aesthetics." After its suspension in 1998, it was unable to resume operations due to operational cost issues. However, its railway technology, forest landscape, and cultural scenery along the route are rich. To preserve and revitalize this historical heritage, the county government adopted the old railway system, maintaining the integrity of the Old Mountain Line, and created Taiwan's first "Railbike Old Mountain Line Rail Bike." This dynamic cultural preservation method allows tourists to experience the beauty of the Old Mountain Line in a new low-carbon and eco-friendly way, and it has proudly received "International Cittaslow" certification from Italy! Each rail bike car can accommodate 4 people and is equipped with thoughtful and safe riding facilities, including GPS positioning, audio guide commentary service, and an emergency rescue notification system. They also feature specially designed boarding/alighting pedals, handrails, dashboards, storage racks, cup holders, sunshades, transparent PS rain shields, and other amenities. What's very thoughtful is that, in addition to human pedal power, it also comes with electric assistance, so you don't have to worry about getting tired and unable to pedal; you can effortlessly enjoy the scenery along the way. The round trip from Shengxing Station to Liyutan is 12 kilometers, passing through 5 scenic spots of the Old Mountain Line: Shengxing Station - the highest railway station in western Taiwan → Tunnel No. 2 (Time Tunnel) - featuring LED light projections on the century-old railway → Yutengping Iron Bridge and Longteng Broken Bridge Ruins - stunning county-designated historical sites → Tunnels No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 (Straight Tunnel Group) - a rare and beautiful layered series of tunnels → Liyutan Reservoir - where emerald waters create a breathtaking reflection.
