The "Guogang Shell Fossil Layer" contains shell fossils formed approximately one to six million years ago. The rock strata include fossils of bivalves, pteropods, gastropods, and corals. As early as Shōwa 5 (1930) during the Japanese colonial period, the Taiwan Governor-General's Office designated it for preservation. In the 44th year of the Republic (1955), the Miaoli County Historical Records Committee erected the "Guogang Shell Fossil Layer Stele" here, announcing that this site was exclusively for academic research and strictly prohibited from indiscriminate excavation, with the aim of preserving the shell fossil layer as a historic site.
