Gaga'o'an Indigenous Culture Park (Baguali Tribe)

Located in Nanzhuang Township, the Baguali Tribe is a Saisiyat tribal village, rich in indigenous cultural characteristics. The community is entirely composed of Saisiyat people, and their main economic activities are bamboo farming, vegetable cultivation, and operating guesthouses. The exterior walls of the houses are decorated with moso bamboo cladding, adorned with totem paintings and carvings, fully showcasing the unique lifestyle or family character of each household. Many gardens also feature wooden pavilions derived from traditional watchtowers, creating a village atmosphere deeply rooted in indigenous culture. The Baguali Tribe was originally called 'Lagasan' in the Saisiyat language, meaning 'a place where camphor trees flourish.' During the Japanese colonial era, the name HAKALIKI was given, derived from the Japanese pronunciation for 'eight hills,' as there were eight undulating hills counting south from the Nan River under the Danan Bridge. This name was later transliterated into the Chinese characters 'Baguali'.
