Zhenghan Trail

The Zhenghan Trail is located next to Provincial Highway 1 in Tanwen Village, Zaoqiao Township. The round trip is about two kilometers, with both uphill and downhill sections. While it can't be called a "Hero's Slope," the trail boasts rich flora and fauna, including camphor trees, casuarina, and wild peonies. Railroad ties serve as steps, adding to its rustic charm. The views are excellent and the scenery is pleasant. The "Zhenghan Memorial Monument" at the summit recounts a tragic yet inspiring story: In 1964, a young man named Zhenghan, in his twenties, from Tanwen Village, was working in a field one day. A group of children playing by the Zhonggang River got caught in a swift current and were about to drown. Hearing their cries for help, Zhenghan bravely jumped into the river to rescue the children. However, his leg was cut by barbed wire from a dam, preventing him from getting to shore, and he tragically drowned. To commemorate Zhenghan's selfless act of saving others, then Minister of Education Yan Zhenxing erected a monument on the hill with the best views in the area in 1965, inscribing words like "When others drown, I drown," which have been passed down to this day. From the monument's elevated position, one can gaze out over the Zhonggang River Plain and the Taiwan Strait. These excellent views are a major selling point. Consequently, since the Zhenghan Trail was opened, an increasing number of people visit on weekends for walks and exercise.
