Tai'an Hot Spring Area

The renowned Tai'an Hot Spring is located in the Wenshui River Valley, nestled between Henglong Mountain, Niaozui Mountain, and Huzi Mountain. The hot spring source, which gushes from the cliffside along the Niaozui Mountain stream, was accidentally discovered in 1908 by an Atayal tribesman while chasing prey. Taiwan was under Japanese rule at the time. In 1910, the Japanese established a "Police Sanatorium" here, exclusively for Japanese police officers and their families. Due to the terrain's resemblance to a peninsula, it was named "Kamijima Onsen." After the Retrocession of Taiwan, it was renamed "Tai'an Guesthouse" and continued to be managed and used by the local police bureau. In 1963, former provincial chairman Huang Chieh came to inspect the area. Seeing a small islet in the Wenshui River here, backed by the majestic presence of Hushan (Tiger Mountain), he renamed it "Hushan Hot Spring." In 1978, Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo, then Premier, visited and formally named it "Tai'an Hot Spring," signifying his hope for "peace and prosperity for the nation and its people." The source of Tai'an Hot Spring has abundant water year-round. Its characteristic is a milky white, slightly translucent, weakly alkaline carbonic acid hot spring with an average water temperature of around 47 degrees Celsius. Not only does it lack the pungent smell of sulfur springs, but bathing in it leaves the skin feeling exceptionally smooth and refreshed, earning it the elegant nickname "Beauty Soup." Its excellent water quality has also made it a precious source that strongly attracts hot spring enthusiasts! Tai'an Hot Spring is surrounded by virgin forests, with picturesque mountains and clear waters. Although the hot spring became famous quite early, it still retains its simple and unpretentious charm to this day. Upon arriving at Jinshui Village, you'll find numerous hot spring establishments. While each has its unique features, they are all built closely against the natural mountain terrain, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. There are no overdeveloped tourist shopping streets along the main road, nor bustling traffic or crowds of people. After nightfall, apart from a few cars of late-arriving hot spring visitors, the entire mountain area settles into an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
