Wunshui Old Street

Wunshui is situated at the confluence of Wunshui Creek, an upstream tributary of Houlong River, and its own tributary, Dahu Creek. The geological strata through which Wunshui Creek flows, particularly in some sections, consist of soft shale layers. Every time there's a flood, the creek water remains turbid and unclear for an extended period, leading residents to name it Wunshui. (In Hakka, "Wun" refers to turbid water.) In earlier times, agricultural products from southern Shitan, the five northern villages of Tai'an, and the Dahu area were all transported to Wunshui Old Street, and then further distributed to Miaoli City by handcarts from this area. This region served as a primary cargo hub and an early distribution center for goods. During the 1960s and 1970s, when resources were scarce, people utilized straw to create a highly effective thermal insulator: the 'Tea Cozy' (chá shòu). The 'Tea Cozy' is a significant legacy left by the ancestors of this area. Today, after the current township mayor, Mr. Gu, vigorously lobbied for funding for its reconstruction, Wunshui Old Street has taken on a distinctly new look. It fully reflects the simple and practical demeanor of the Hakka people and is sure to drive the development of Shitan's local cultural industries. In recent years, this place has become the gateway for tourists entering Shei-Pa National Park and Tai'an Hot Spring Scenic Area. The originally old and cluttered settlement has now taken on a new appearance. The early quaint wooden buildings have undergone comprehensive planning, been adorned with new signs, and complemented by newly renovated brick pathways. They now appear neat yet still exude a faint nostalgic charm, transporting visitors into a time tunnel, allowing them to imagine the past splendor of bustling goods distribution, lively crowds, and a constant stream of vehicles and horses. Although it no longer boasts its past prosperity today, the present tranquil scenery still offers a unique charm! In addition to the 'Tea Cozy,' its proximity to Dahu provides geographical convenience, making traces of strawberries visible everywhere. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausages, and strawberry ice cream have long become an integral part of this area. Besides the existing shops, every weekend, local residents set up stalls in front of their homes, displaying Hakka snacks such as Ban Tiao (flat rice noodles), Cai Bao (steamed vegetable buns), and salted vegetable soup, inviting passing tourists to stop and enjoy them. While the delicious food satisfies the stomach, the Hakka hospitality further enriches the soul of every traveler.
