The Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum is the only public museum in Taiwan specializing in wood sculpture. It opened on April 9, 1995, primarily collecting and exhibiting local and international wood sculpture artworks. In May 2003, the expansion project for its second building was completed, adding spaces for wood sculpture education, exhibitions, collections, and a library/resource room. Its unique architectural design won the Taiwan Architecture Award that same year. With its rich collections and facilities, the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum officially entered a new era, becoming an international professional wood sculpture museum. The exhibition spaces of the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum include the first and second floors and the basement of Building 1, as well as the second, third, and fourth floors of Building 2. Exhibition themes cover nine sections: the origins of carving art, historical styles of Chinese sculpture, Austronesian wood sculpture, the origins and development of Sanyi wood sculpture, architectural furniture, temple religion, mixed media and contemporary art invitation exhibitions, and special exhibitions on wood sculpture art, meticulously showcasing the beauty of wood sculpture. After visiting, guests will gain a comprehensive and perfect understanding of the application and art of wood sculpture. The second floor showcases Sanyi's flourishing wood sculpture industry in Taiwan, and displays wood sculptures encountered in daily life, such as architectural elements, furniture, and carving tools. The exquisite wood sculptures in the temple deity section fully convey the devotion of Chinese folk beliefs. In addition to exhibiting its collection, the museum regularly hosts solo exhibitions by woodcarving masters and lectures by experts and scholars each month. It also organizes activities such as live demonstrations by master carvers, workshops, and woodcarving DIY sessions, allowing visitors to personally participate in woodcarving during DIY activities, experience the joy of hands-on woodcarving, and get closer to the woodcarving lifestyle and art.
