The Maibalai Hiking Trail is located in Wufeng Township, Hsinchu County, offering a mid-level mountain route that combines challenge with natural beauty. The trail is part of what hikers refer to as the 'You-Xia-Mai Traverse,' encompassing Youluo Mountain, Xiashan Mountain, and Maibalai Mountain. Known for its high difficulty, the entire traverse typically takes over ten hours, but many choose to undertake a single-peak ascent of Maibalai Mountain. Maibalai Mountain stands at an elevation of 2,113 meters, with a vertical drop exceeding 1,000 meters. It is famous for its steepness, leading hikers to humorously nickname it 'Mai Ge Lai Shan' (meaning 'Don't Come Again Mountain' or 'Don't Even Think About It Mountain'). The trailhead begins at the Wufeng Work Station of the Agricultural Research and Extension Station. The initial section of the trail is a steep uphill climb, traversing through cedar and mixed forests. The forest canopy provides tranquil shade, the air is fresh, and a rich forest fragrance fills the atmosphere. The first peak is Maibalai Northwest Peak, surrounded by Yushan rhododendron forests. Although it offers no panoramic views, it possesses a unique serene charm. Continuing on, you'll reach the southern fork of Luoshan Forest Road, where you can choose to head towards the main peak or the west peak. The path to the main peak is covered with pine needles, resembling a dreamy, misty forest. The main peak offers expansive views; on clear days, you can overlook Zhudong Township, Wuzhi Mountain, and other scenic spots. The section leading to the west peak is gentle and easy to walk, with a soft and comfortable carpet of pine needles underfoot. Sunlight filters through the cedar forest, creating vibrant and lively scenery. The Maibalai Trail blends challenge with natural beauty, making it suitable for hikers with strong leg endurance. Here, walking in nature, you can experience the cleansing phytoncides of the forest, allowing your mind and body to become one with the environment, and truly savor the joy of hiking. Maibalai Hiking Trail type: Mid-level mountain trail Estimated time: Approximately 8-9 hours (for a loop traverse) Elevation: 1,000-2,113 meters Difficulty: Moderate
