Visitor Essentials

The Zhishengmaotai Mountain Trail is a famous hiking route in Jianshi Township, boasting rich natural landscapes and historical relics. Starting from the Battleship Rock Suspension Bridge, the initial section of the trail consists of steep stone steps, with exposed shale layers visible on both sides. As you proceed, the view transforms into lush bamboo groves, where bamboo leaves sway gently in the breeze, creating a crisp sound that leaves one feeling refreshed and at peace. For some hikers, the steep incline of the initial section might be somewhat challenging, but rest benches are provided, allowing hikers to slow down and rest as needed. After about 15 minutes, the trail enters a primitive mountain path. Slippery fallen leaves and fallen trees in the forest might pose minor obstacles, but these also add to the wild charm of the hike. Along the way, you will pass the ruins of an Aiyong (indigenous defense guard) sub-station. The existing retaining walls and firing holes evoke images of its past as a military stronghold. As you continue upwards, plants such as Taiwanese oak, Formosan ivy, and Liquidambar form a beautiful landscape, allowing you to immerse yourself in the embrace of nature. After passing a pavilion, the trail gradually narrows. Continuing further will lead you to West Peak. The triangulation point at West Peak, with an elevation of 1,492 meters, is a natural rock formation, attracting many hikers who stop to take photos. Next, the trail continues through an area interwoven with two-leaf pines and various tree species. More military relics can be seen along the way, such as the "Tunyesheng Artillery Fortification." Finally, you will ascend to the main peak of Zhishengmaotai Mountain, at an elevation of 1,789 meters. Surrounded by forests, two giant fir trees here have become popular photo spots. For hikers seeking a greater challenge, you can continue to Huli Mountain. This route, known as "Zhi-Hu Traverse," is steep and suitable for experienced hikers with ample physical stamina. Whether it's the golden hues of autumn or the vibrant greenery of spring and summer, Zhishengmaotai Mountain attracts an increasing number of hiking enthusiasts with its unique natural and historical charm. Zhishengmaotai Mountain Trail type: Loop trail. Difficulty: Moderate. Length: 12.8 kilometers. Trail surface: Primitive mountain path. Starting point: Next to the Battleship Rock Suspension Bridge.
