Leshan Temple

Leshan Temple is located in Dashanbei, Hengshan Township, Hsinchu County. This courtyard-style temple, rich in historical background, was first built in the 16th year of Guangxu (1890) by local resident Lan Zhengran and was originally named 'Shixia Temple.' After the Japanese army occupied Taiwan in the 21st year of Guangxu (1895), the temple was burned down. It was later rebuilt with funds raised by local residents and completed in the 10th year of Taisho (1921), becoming a local center of faith. Its architecture is unique, particularly in its use of local sandstone for wall materials, showcasing authentic Hakka architectural features. Leshan Temple primarily enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha, Manjushri Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. It preserves numerous ancient artifacts and cultural heritage, imbued with strong historical and folk religious significance. In 2006 (the 95th year of the Republic of China), Leshan Temple was designated as a county-level historic monument. This place is not only a religious site but also an important local historical witness, closely linked to Hakka resistance against Japanese rule, especially with anti-Japanese patriots like Zhong Shimei and Jiang Shaozu. Besides its historical and cultural value, the natural scenery around Leshan Temple is also a major highlight. The 'Daqidong Tung Blossom Trail' behind it is an excellent spot for viewing tung blossoms. Every year when the tung blossoms are in full bloom, the entire valley is covered with white tung flowers, creating a beautiful natural tableau. Additionally, the nearby 'Qilong Ancient Trail' is famous as a firefly trail. In late spring and early summer, visitors can enjoy the beautiful sight of fireflies dancing along the trail, as if stepping into a fairy tale world. Today, Leshan Temple has become a popular outdoor photography location for many photographers.
