Located halfway up the mountain from Emei Township, Hsinchu County, where the road turns and descends a narrow slope, the Zheng Yongguo Pottery Studio occupies a vast expanse of tranquil grassy woodland. Zheng Yongguo habitually uses anthropological and philosophical perspectives to express his unique interpretations of life experiences through his ceramic works. He believes that the spirit and wisdom of ancient potters, which he pursues, are embedded even in seemingly unassuming pottery fragments. "Every time I develop a new series, it's like a new beginning for me," Zheng Yongguo says. He believes that, unlike other art forms, pottery, no matter how unique the ideas, must undergo the trial by fire before its true essence is revealed. Although materials and knowledge evolve with time, pottery has always remained in the era of manual craftsmanship. Taking wheel throwing as an example of a forming method, it represents a dialogue between human will and mechanical civilization, and also the most economical aesthetic. His 'Flowing Earth' and 'Woman Bottle' series are prime examples of this.
