Zhudong Main Canal

The Zhudong Main Canal is the largest-scale hydraulic engineering project with the widest irrigation area in Zhudong's pioneering history. After its completion, hundreds of jia (an old unit of land area, approximately 0.97 hectares) of barren land were transformed into fertile fields. It made outstanding contributions to the agricultural development of the Erzhongpu and Sanzhongpu areas of Zhudong Township, and also played an extremely important role in the development and water supply of today's Science Park. The Zhudong Main Canal was originally designed as an irrigation canal, sourcing its water from the Shangping River by diverting it at Zaoshupai in Ruifeng Village. In its early days, it was solely used for irrigation. Later, due to the significant water demand in Hsinchu and Zhudong areas, and the establishment of the Hsinchu Science Park requiring large amounts of water daily, Baoshan Reservoir was built, with its primary water source being the Zhudong Canal. Therefore, it is clear that the canal's original planners had great foresight. Today, it not only supplies irrigation water but also covers domestic and industrial water needs, making immense contributions to Zhudong.
