Zhan Zhiliang Ceramics

Located on Hukou Old Street, "Zhan Zhiliang Ceramics" is ceramic artist Zhan Zhiliang's creative and exhibition/sales base. The space was formerly the Hukou Years Restaurant. The serene daily life of the old street, along with its spacious and rustic qualities, deeply attracted him, leading him to move from Taoyuan and quietly cultivate his craft here. The front half of the studio serves as the exhibition and sales area, where his antique collections and ceramic creations are abundantly displayed on windowsills and shelves. A workbench allows students to apply glazes and engrave here. The back half houses five kilns, with the largest one exceeding an adult's height. The first step in the experience course is to condition the clay. This involves kneading the clay like dough to ensure a uniform texture, and an appropriate level of moisture and softness. Next, the clay is placed on a potter's wheel to be shaped into the desired form, and then accessories like handles are added using more clay. For decoration, you can attach clay shapes, or carve patterns and text to add a personal touch. It's important to note that metal oxides in glazes change color after firing. For instance, iron oxide turns brown after firing. When glazing, pay extra attention to ensure it's the effect you desire. Firing is the final step. Zhan Zhiliang will assist in placing the painted piece into the kiln to be fired at a high temperature of 1,240°C. After completion, the finished piece will be shipped to you, and you should receive it in approximately two weeks, ready to use!
