Heritage Market

Browsing markets is one of the small pleasures of travel. Every weekend and holiday, the open space in front of the former Guanxi Police Station transforms into the 'Heritage Market'. Currently, there are 6 permanent stalls, and most of the vendors are local residents or small farmers. The market offers products such as handmade soaps, Hakka rice dishes, coffee, vegetarian snacks, honey and bitter tea oil, handmade wooden crafts, and more, with each stall boasting unique characteristics. One stall, selling handmade soaps and vegetables, is run by a retired couple who returned to their hometown. The wife, fond of crafting, learned to make natural handmade soaps, while her husband, prioritizing food safety, became a small farmer, cultivating non-toxic fruits and vegetables without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Another stall in the market, 'Rice Food Mama', offers a variety of traditional Hakka rice dishes, such as turnip cake, mugwort glutinous rice cake, Hakka zongzi, sweet glutinous rice cake, and savory glutinous rice cake, all bursting with authentic Hakka flavor. In addition to handmade soaps and Hakka rice dishes, you can also find Hakka mothers' homemade braised dishes and side dishes, as well as processed agricultural products like kimchi and dried radish. Coffee lovers can try the local coffee produced by the Guanxi Mawudu Coffee Cooperative. The coffee beans, self-produced from the Mawudu mountainous area, are roasted between a light and medium roast. Beyond the coffee's inherent flavor, they carry lingering notes of longan, plum, maltose, dried almonds, and other complex layers.
