In 1946, Zhang Xueliang, the once-influential "Young Marshal of the Northeast," arrived in Taiwan from Chongqing, beginning thirteen years of house arrest in Cingquan, Wufeng. The residence seen today is a Japanese-style cypress bungalow, rebuilt on a different site after the original structure was completely destroyed by Typhoon Gloria in 1964. The museum houses historical materials and precious photographs donated by Zhang Xueliang's nieces, Zhang Lüheng and Zhang Lüzhi, as well as General Zhang's manuscripts, writings, and oral histories from Cingquan's elders. Every step inside feels like returning to the days when Zhang Xueliang and his wife, Zhao Yidi, lived quietly in the mountains, experiencing the transformation from a turbulent political life to one of quiet contemplation. The Zhang Xueliang Residence is not just a nostalgic attraction; it is also a cultural window into modern Chinese history.
