Shangping Old Street

Shangping Old Street is located in Shangping along the Nancheng Highway. It is an old street that blends traditional Southern Min (Minnan) brick construction with European Baroque-style architecture. During the Qing Dynasty, it served as the boundary between Han Chinese settlement and Atayal tribal territory. In the Japanese colonial era, the Shangping Aiyong (Frontier Guard) Supervisory Office was established here, making it a crucial gateway to Wufeng. It functioned as a transit station for timber, camphor, and tea, and a place for Han Chinese and Atayal people to exchange daily necessities. This mere 100-meter street was once a bustling commercial area with tobacco and liquor shops, pork stalls, inns, and restaurants, effectively bearing the economic backbone of the entire region! Today, it remains a row of old two-story shop-residences and traditional red-brick and wooden houses. Only a few small local shops are still operating, and its past prosperity is long gone. However, precisely because it hasn't been overly commercialized by tourism, it exudes a unique tranquil and slow-living atmosphere. There are several recreational trails nearby, such as Shangrui Trail and Fude Forest Trail, as well as attractions like orchards and organic farms.
