Smangus

Smangus, known as "God's Tribe," is a hidden gem with thousand-year-old sacred trees and a secret cherry blossom sanctuary, nestled deep within the mountains of Jianshi Township in Hsinchu County. Its magnificent ancient trees and misty, ethereal atmosphere earned it the moniker "God's Tribe." Situated at an altitude of approximately 1600 meters, it offers diverse landscapes throughout the four seasons, making it a stunning mountain community that harmonizes natural beauty with Atayal culture. Starting from the village, a hike along the trail leads deep into the pristine forest, reaching the breathtaking sacred tree ecological area in about two hours. These towering Taiwan cypress giants, some over a thousand years old, stand majestically and robustly, representing one of Taiwan's few remaining areas with an intact pristine forest ecosystem. Along the trek, you can admire stream valleys, mountain mists, native plants, and the sounds of birds and insects, offering a cleansing experience for the body and soul. Moreover, every spring (around February to March), over 2,000 cherry trees in the village bloom successively, transforming Smangus into a secluded high-mountain cherry blossom viewing paradise. The intermingling pink and white cherry blossoms, set against the village's rustic wooden architecture, create a romantic, fairy-tale-like scene, making it a beautiful photo spot cherished by photographers and travelers alike. After gaining electricity in 1975 and establishing the tribal development association in 1995, the local residents of Smangus have worked together to build facilities such as a church, cultural classrooms, and guesthouses, while simultaneously preserving their indigenous cultural spirit and respect for the land. Today, Smangus is not just a tourist destination, but a vibrant living Atayal cultural village.
