Dong'an Ancient Bridge, Guanxi

The Dong'an Bridge, spanning the Niulan River, is a five-arch stone bridge whose design embodies both structural integrity and aesthetic beauty. Its ancient name was "Caifeng Bridge" (Colorful Phoenix Bridge). Constructed in 1933 (Shōwa Year 8), it serves as a vital thoroughfare connecting Guanxi Township and Dong'an Village. Originally, the Dong'an Bridge was merely a temporary wooden bridge that would be washed away whenever mountain torrents erupted, causing traffic disruptions. Consequently, local residents advocated for building a sturdier bridge. Local gentry hired Japanese engineers for the design, then employed workers to collect finely textured stones from the Jinshan area. These stones were transported to the site by human labor and meticulously constructed by renowned local master stonemason Li Zhen and his team. The bridge remains in excellent condition after decades of use, showcasing its superior engineering techniques and quality.
