Xincheng Xinfeng Temple

Founded during the Daoguang era, Xinfeng Temple is primarily dedicated to the Three Mountain Kings and has historically served as the spiritual hub for the three communities of Xincheng, Baodou, and Shenjing within Baoshan Township. The temple's busiest times are during the birthdays of the Three Mountain Kings, celebrated on the 25th day of the 2nd, 5th, and 8th lunar months. Additionally, on the 14th and 15th of the first lunar month, a "Capon Competition" is held. During this event, residents bring their home-raised chickens to compete for the title of largest and fattest, making it a significant local spectacle. In earlier times, when medical care was scarce and plagues were rampant, Xinfeng Temple would primarily organize a two-day deity procession and blessing event, known as "Da Zhongwu" (literally "Hitting Noon" or "Lunch Gathering"), on the 14th and 15th days of the first lunar month, to pray for a peaceful new year. Today, the "Da Zhongwu" event embodies the meaning of "leisurely time and a good harvest year." When the procession team rests in the village at noon, villagers spontaneously offer food to them. This event fosters community cohesion and promotes the Hakka spirit of diligence, sharing, cherishing blessings, and dedication, making it a vital activity for the preservation of Hakka culture.
