Wanfo Temple

Wanfo Temple, located on Shitou Mountain at the border of Hsinchu and Miaoli, is a Buddhist temple built into a natural rock cave, quietly nestled amidst dense mountain forests. As early as before the Republic of China era (pre-1912), spiritual practitioners meditated here. It was renovated in Showa 2 (1917), officially named 'Wanfo Temple' in Showa 8 (1933), and completely rebuilt in Republic of China 71 (1982), taking on its solemn yet welcoming appearance seen today. The most distinctive feature of Wanfo Temple is its main hall, which is a rock cave. Below the Buddha shrine inside the cave, a natural spring emerges, offering sweet and cool water that refreshes the heart, providing a sense of coolness and tranquility to weary hikers. The main hall enshrines the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva, who is compassionate and solemn, blessing all beings. Upon entering Wanfo Temple, one cannot help but smile at the group of lifelike statues of young monks (Shami). Some greet visitors, some carry water, some sweep the floor, all with natural movements and adorable expressions. They seem to be quietly guarding this Pure Land, adding a touch of warmth and childlike charm to the solemn Buddhist temple. Wanfo Temple is not only a place for spiritual practice but also a serene space where one can slow down, appreciate nature, and engage in a dialogue with their inner self.
