Lidong Mountain Trail

A 'Small Hundred Peaks' forest, autumn foliage, and the ruins of an ancient fort and artillery position. Lidong Mountain, designated as the 28th 'Small Hundred Peaks,' is located in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. Rising to an elevation of 1,914 meters, it is a moderate-level hiking trail that offers both natural healing and historical significance. The trail is approximately 1.5 kilometers long, featuring natural stone paths along the way. With an elevation gain/loss of 360 meters, it offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for families to hike together and experience the beauty of the deep mountains. The trail can be accessed from the Mamei Road trailhead, which has a gentler slope and is shaded by dense forests, making it pleasant even in summer. Another old trailhead, Lidong Villa (Lidong Shan Zhuang), possesses a unique mystical atmosphere, having once served as a filming location for a horror movie. Next to the villa, there is a 'Peace Bell' symbolizing blessings, offering travelers a sense of reassurance and good wishes. Stepping onto Lidong Mountain is like entering a forest sanctuary. Primitive forests intertwine with bamboo groves, teeming with life. In autumn and winter, the leaves of Taiwan Red Maple gradually turn crimson, spreading vibrant colors across the mountain like a painted canvas, making it a pilgrimage site for photography enthusiasts and maple leaf admirers. Upon reaching the summit, distant landscapes unfold before your eyes: the magnificent peaks of Dabajian Mountain, Mount Xue main peak, Nanhu Mountain, and the Holy Ridge are all within view. At the summit, the weathered Baroque-style ruins of an ancient fort, once an artillery position for military use, now stand with only four walls remaining. They silently tell tales of past years and stories, adding a touch of historical color to the trail. Lidong Mountain is not merely a physically challenging hiking route; it is a healing journey interwoven with nature and history.
