Liuliao Historic Trail

Featuring valley potholes, the Seven Stars Sacred Tree forest, and a romantic tung blossom trail, the Liuliao Historic Trail is located in Emei Township, Hsinchu County, within the Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area. It is a tranquil path that boasts both natural scenery and rich historical significance. This historic trail was once one of the 'Thirty-Six Defense Posts' (隘寮) established by the Jin Guangfu land development company to defend against indigenous peoples, numbered sixth, hence its name. With the changing times, it has transformed into a hiking trail full of pristine landscapes and the ambiance of the mountains and forests. The trailhead is located next to the Shishan Visitor Center. The initial section is a gentle asphalt industrial road, suitable for warming up. The latter part gradually enters a mountainous path section, winding upwards along the Liuliao Stream valley. The sound of gurgling water accompanies you, and beneath your feet is a natural stone path. Traces of former Hakka settlements and abandoned coal mines can be seen everywhere, creating an atmosphere ripe for exploring old mountain village memories. Most striking are the pothole formations in the valley, and the 'Seven Stars Sacred Tree,' composed of a 400-year-old mother camphor tree and a 100-year-old sapling. This sacred tree, with seven robust branches extending from the same root, is not only a magnificent sight but also served as a 'Bo Gong' (Earth God) tree worshipped by early settlers, embodying rich folk beliefs. Continuing past the Liuliao settlement, the trail enters a forest bypass path, preserving the original appearance of the historic trail, making it the most scenic section of the entire route. Along the way, the woods are lush and green. From April to May each year, when tung blossoms are in full bloom, their white petals cover the path like snow, making the trail as romantic and charming as a painting. Finally, you'll reach Seven Stars Pavilion, then return via the Shishan Historic Trail, completing a circular mountain and forest journey. The Liuliao Historic Trail is a natural path suitable for families and leisurely hikes. it offers not only rich ecology and geological wonders but also a chance to immerse oneself in Hakka village history and cultural beliefs. It's suitable year-round, with late spring and early summer being particularly ideal for enjoying flowers and scenery.
