In 1893, the Longitudinal Railway established a station in Old Hukou, making it a transportation and economic hub, which spurred the development of the old street. Starting from 1914, unique 'Taisho-style architecture' was constructed, combining red brick materials from Southern China with embossed hall names, creating an elegant atmosphere. With the relocation of the station in 1929, the old street gradually declined, but in recent years, it has been revitalized and regained its charm. Though today's Hukou Old Street has shed its former glamor and now boasts simple, elegant red brick buildings, its unique nostalgic and artistic atmosphere continues to draw countless literati and artists. Although a highway runs alongside it, stepping into Hukou Old Street feels like entering another dimension. The wooden station standing in front of the Catholic Church softly recounts the bygone railway era; the low-rise housing style, brick-red Baroque architecture, three-dimensional carvings on the main archway, retro-style shop signs, and well-preserved arched arcade walkways all layer the street's history, showcasing its appearance from the early Republic of China era. The street, approximately 300 meters long and 10 meters wide, stretching from the Catholic Church to Sanyuan Temple at its end, is filled with stunningly elegant architecture at every turn. Beyond local residences, the street also features old clinics, cultural and historical studios, cafes, restaurants, tofu pudding shops, and more. Wafting from snack stalls is the aroma of stir-fried pig intestines with ginger shreds, mingling with the rich scent of coffee, creating a harmonious blend of East and West. While visiting, tourists might consider stepping into local cultural studios to experience the beauty of Old Hukou's renewed charm in a more in-depth manner.
