Longtan, Taoyuan, a region that has witnessed the rise and fall of Taiwan's tea production, once saw hundreds of tea factories during its peak. One after another, they closed down and sold their land, leaving only a handful today. Mr. Huang Wen-liang, the fourth-generation successor of Fuyuan Tea Factory, feels this deeply. The flourishing 'black gold' era, when annual production reached 3 to 4 million jin (Taiwanese catty), declined sharply to one-tenth of its former volume as export advantages disappeared. However, with an unwavering belief in perseverance, the tea factory weathered the downturn, not only sustaining its century-old tea heritage but also vigorously promoting a culture of quality tea.
