Yan Nan Academy was the lecture hall of Song Dynasty scholar Zhu Xi in Kinmen, and also Kinmen's earliest center for cultural and educational activities. This also fostered a literary atmosphere in the area, leading to Kinmen producing numerous *jinshi* (successful candidates in the imperial examinations) during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the late Ming Dynasty, Yan Nan Academy was converted into Taiwenyan Temple, primarily dedicated to the Black-faced Qingshui Patriarch. It is collectively known as one of Kinmen's Five Great Temples, along with Taiwu Mountain Haiyin Temple, Tianpu Chenghuang Temple, Jincheng South Gate Xianglian Temple, and Anqian Enzhu Temple.
