Outer Martial Temple

The Martial Temple (Wumiao) enshrines Guan Sheng Di Jun (Emperor Guan). The Outer Martial Temple is a complementary structure to the Martial Temple, dedicated to Lord Guan's mount, the Red Hare, as well as his generals and stablemen. For this reason, it is commonly known as "Horse Stable Temple" (Mǎshěgōng). The Martial Temple in Houpu was built during the late Ming Dynasty's Yongli era. The Outer Martial Temple was subsequently built outside the West Gate, also enshrining King Han, who is the guardian deity of the Ximen (West Gate) district. To differentiate it from the city's Martial Temple, it is referred to as the Outer Martial Temple. To the right of the temple is a main thoroughfare. A new stage has been built in the plaza in front of the temple. Whenever the temple hosts celebrations or thanksgiving opera performances, the plaza is bustling with spectators, and combined with the constant flow of vehicles, the festivities reach a vibrant climax.
