On August 23, 1958, the world-shocking '823 Artillery Battle' began. At 6:30 PM that day, the Chinese People's Liberation Army concentrated 342 artillery pieces of various types and unleashed a carpet shelling on the Kinmen area. Immediately, shells rained down, and dust flew everywhere. Over 57,500 shells were continuously fired within two hours.
