Nanao Ecological Education Center

The Nanao Ecological Education Center is co-located with the Nanao Workstation of the Yilan Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency. In 1997 (86th year of the Republic of China), the Nanao Workstation relocated here. They transformed the former camphor tree plantation into a native plant specimen garden and established the Nanao Ecological Education Center beside the main office building. The center provides educational interpretation on topics such as Taiwan's forest resource utilization and ecological conservation. Beyond the indoor exhibits, the native tree garden outside the center is also well worth a visit. The plants in the native tree garden are arranged according to a botanical classification system, comprising a total of 47 families and 120 species, primarily woody plants, complemented by vines and herbaceous plants. It serves as an excellent venue for field trips for elementary and junior high schools in Yilan County, and even schools in the northern region. The center is adjacent to three important protected areas: the "Wushibi Coastal Nature Reserve," the "Nanao Broadleaf Forest Nature Reserve," and the "Guanyin Coastal Wildlife Important Habitat." In its interpretive education and outreach efforts, the center also addresses the current status and challenges faced by these surrounding protected areas. Beyond serving as a local interpretive education platform for nature and culture in the Nanao area, the center also allows visitors to learn about various topics within its scope, such as protected areas, biodiversity, forest ecosystem management, ecotourism, community forestry, and more. This ensures the Nanao Ecological Education Center effectively fulfills its optimal functions and services.
