Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area

At Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area, you can admire banyan trees that form a forest from a single root system, stroll through beautiful artificial forests, climb Hat Mountain for panoramic views, or trace upstream along the Fenggang River to Shuangliu Waterfall, once voted the second most beautiful waterfall in Taiwan. With its abundant negative ions and fresh air, visitors can experience a unique charm of the Hengchun Peninsula. This area is located in Shizi Township, Pingtung County, less than a thirty-minute drive from Fenggang. The name 'Shuangliu' (meaning 'double streams') originates from this being the confluence of the Daren Stream and Neiwen Stream, both upstream tributaries of the Fenggang River. Historically, it was a living area for the Paiwan people, and remnants of their distinctive 'turtle shell houses' can still be found along the Banyan Trail. Since the Forestry Bureau planted large areas of tropical trees like Chinese tallow trees and acacia in 1965, it has become an excellent spot to appreciate the beauty of broad-leaved artificial forests. Its unique ecology includes representative plants of the Hengchun Peninsula visible along the Hat Mountain Trail, such as *Eriobotrya deflexa* (Hengchun Loquat), *Schima superba* (Portside Schima), and *Selaginella boninensis* (Ogasawara Spikemoss). The forest is also home to birds like the Taiwan Blue Magpie and Taiwan Hwamei, and over 196 species of butterflies awaiting your discovery. You might even encounter the conservation-listed Golden Birdwing butterfly!
