Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area

The Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area, renowned for the beautiful 'sound of the forest waves' (森濤), is the premier destination in southern Taiwan for forest bathing, escaping the summer heat, and enjoying nature. Tengjhih, located about a two-hour drive from Kaohsiung City, Pingtung City, and Tainan City, was historically a living area for the Bunun tribe. During the Japanese colonial period, Kyoto University established an experimental forest here, resulting in the presence of rare Japanese cypress and extensive Japanese cedar plantations, which are uncommon in Taiwan. The famous Liugui Security Line also passed through this area, leaving behind numerous historical relics. The park's elevation ranges from 1500 to 1804 meters, ensuring a cool and pleasant climate. In its 'cloud forest zone,' large trees such as stout camphor, *Schima superba*, and *Castanopsis eyrei* thrive. It also boasts the uniquely named 'Tengjhih Begonia' and numerous rare fern species, all highly precious. Furthermore, it harbors a rich ecosystem where many rare insects can be found, including the Lewis's stag beetle, the great green emperor moth, and the Taiwan cicada. This is also one of the easiest places in Taiwan to spot the Yellow Tit, making it very special and an excellent destination for hiking and birdwatching.
