Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area

Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area (hereinafter referred to as 'the Area') is located in the Shangbaling area of the Northern Cross-Island Highway in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City. The name of the local Atayal Shangbaling tribe, 'Balung,' means 'cypress' or 'giant fallen tree.' 'Lala' is a transliteration of the Atayal word 'R'ra,' which carries meanings such as 'beautiful,' 'awe-inspiring,' or 'to gaze/watch over.' One interpretation suggests that the Area served as a place for tribespeople to observe prey and defend against enemies, while another implies that tribespeople felt awe and wonder upon arriving here. Both sufficiently illustrate the Area's rich cypress and ecological resources. Globally, cypress trees are found only in the cloud forests of North America, Japan, and Taiwan, making Lalashan's cypress forests exceptionally precious. The Area is situated in a fog forest zone, characterized by pristine coniferous and broadleaf mixed forests. It fully preserves a precious cluster of giant cypress trees, nurtured by millennia of natural environment. It is also an important habitat for wildlife such as the Taiwan Blue Magpie, Yellow-bellied Bush Robin, and Taiwan Serow. This represents a highly characteristic forest ecosystem in Taiwan's northern mid-elevation mountains, boasting rich natural and cultural features.
